In 2020 Gwyrddio Penarth Greening (GPG) established “Penarth Growing Community”, an initiative to encourage and establish community growing and wildlife gardens in public areas across Penarth.
Due to the restrictions on movement in place since March 2020 it’s been a challenging time to arrange community-wide initiatives so in 2021 we would like to focus on building a network of spaces for growing and wildlife within privately owned gardens across Penarth.
“Growing Together” will create this new network for our town.
We want to support people who live in Penarth to use a space in their gardens for growing food or to support wildlife and nature. It doesn’t matter how small your garden or outside space is, everyone can get involved!
There are already a number of schemes across Penarth working to develop areas of public land to enhance biodiversity and grow fruit and vegetables (e.g. West House, Friends of Victoria Square etc). By linking these sites to similar spaces in private gardens we will greatly increase the area of land and create a network of spaces for nature and growing across the town.
GPG is working with other Penarth based group including the Civic Society’s Tree Forum and local “Friends of” groups to establish this project, and we will work together to publicise the network and encourage wider involvement.
We are organising monthly online meetings so that people can get together to share ideas on growing and greening Penarth. This will help to establish a coalition of groups and people who can work together through the network to meet our ambitions locally around promoting trees, food, wildlife and nature.
We are forming coalition of groups that work together through the network to meet our ambitions locally around trees, food, wildlife and nature. Including:
Penarth Civic Society
Penarth Tree Forum
Friends of Victoria Square
Friends of Golden Gates
Friends of the Kymin
Friends of Belle Vue Park
We have a number of community growing spaces which we link in with alongside other groups to tend, plant and share time with each other when we can, including:
Stanwell Crescent Wildlife Garden
Planters in Belle Vue Park
West House Community Plot
Golden Gates Fruit Garden
Kymin Community Orchard
Cosmeston Community Orchard
