We create and maintain spaces for wildlife and food growing, and we run workshops, open sessions and events. We work closely with other community groups, namely Penarth Civic Society, Penarth Living Streets, STOL Coffee and the Friends of groups for the local parks.
We are a GPG project, Co-founded by Sally Hughes and Eurgain Powell (our GPG lead) in January 2020 after a community gathering of 100 plus people came together to define what we could do locally to tackle the climate and nature crisis. GPG – Gwyrddio Penarth Greening is a community environmental group, established over a decade ago as a constituted community group. In March 2022 GPG gained status as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, with a charity number. GPG holds Benthyg Penarth and Plastic Free Penarth as well as other projects such as the town centre development project with Penarth Civic Society, Penarth Business Group and Penarth Living Streets.
PGC has been supported by Keep Wales Tidy with two small garden packs, one installed at Golden Gates Park with the Friends there, one installed at Stanwell Crescent by Paul Beswick and neighbours. We support Friends of Belle Vue with their raised beds. We work most closely with Friends of the Kymin and Benthyg Penarth in developing the Kymin Grounds. And, Penarth Town Council to tend the West House Community Garden. We had a large development pack from KWT for the Kymin. We also had a small pot of funds from Penarth Town Council in 2021 to buy wildflower seed to give to people who signed up to our Growing Together network.
In March 2022 we began our first funded programme which supports paid work for a project lead role (Sally, Growing Together – Grow-along). We work closely with Food Vale on the Sustainable Food Places project. We are developing a Holding Group to act a little like an advisory board, our aim is to develop a more collaborative approach and a vision for PGC. We are now seeking further funding opportunities, as well as seeking funds to develop the Kymin grounds.
